Man dies in flat fire during firefighters' strike

A man has died in a blaze at a north London flat while firefighters were striking over pensions.
He was found after the London Fire Brigade was called to a ground-floor flat on Oakfield Road, Hornsey, on Saturday evening.
‘The fire damaged part of the ground-floor flat and, sadly, the body of a man was found at the scene,’ an LFB statement declared.
Two fire engines and 14 firefighters from Hornsey station attended the blaze. They were there for about 90 minutes and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The fire service was called to the scene while industrial action organised by the Fire Brigades Union was under way.
The FBU’s London branch tweeted: ‘Information coming in which suggests the London Fire Brigade’s contingency plans failed disastrously tonight.’
However, the LFB claimed: ’Based on early investigations into this death, it is not believed that the strike made any difference to the outcome.’
Firefighters in England and Wales walked out twice in the space of two days as part of a long-running row with the government over changes to their pensions.
