BlackBerry 'ban' lifted at the 11th hour in the UAE

The UAE and it’s two main telecom providers, Etisalat and du, today announced that the threatened ban on BlackBerry messenger services in the UAE had been lifted.
The Emirates’ government news agency WAM announced that the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority said the services – once thought unaccessible to the TRA – ”are now compliant with the UAE’s telecommunications regulatory framework”.
“Therefore”, the TRA statement continued, “all Blackberry services in the UAE will continue to operate as normal and no suspension of service will occur on October 11, 2010”.
The TRA also acknowledged “the positive engagement and collaboration” of BlackBerry maker Research In Motion ”in reaching this regulatory compliant outcome”.
Both UAE telecom providers released similar statements.
“Since the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority’s August 1 announcement regarding the possible suspension of certain Blackberry applications, our focus has always been to ensure continuity of service for our customers”, said a statement from Etisalat.
It added that as a service provider to over 80 per cent BlackBerry users in the UAE, Etisalat will continue offering exceptional services to its existing and future BlackBerry customers.
“In light of the TRA decision, the alternative mobility packages announced by Etisalat in August, for its existing BlackBerry customers, are no longer applicable”, said the statement .
Etisalat also announced that it will be launching two new BlackBerry devices – the Torch and the New Curve, in the coming days.
A statement from Du said: “Since the TRA’s August 1 announcement regarding the possible suspension of certain Blackberry services, our focus has always been to ensure continuity of service for our customers.”
